Franklin method workshops

Op zaterdag 25 februari gaan er in onze studio 2 workshops in de Franklin method door. Om 9.30u een workshop gewijd aan footwork, en in de namiddag om 15u een workshop over nek en schouders.

De Franklin Method

Franklin Method LogoDeze bewegingsmethode, ontwikkeld door Eric Franklin, verenigt de mentale en motorische elementen van onze beweging door gebruik te maken van:

  • Een creatieve, mentale beeldrijkheid
  • De anatomische verklaring van functie en beweging in 3D
  • Het fysieke localiseren en invoelen van het behandelde materiaal in beweging

Deze werkwijze, die gebaseerd is op fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek, brengt een enorme efficiëntie in alle fysieke behandelingen, training en/of revalidatie.

1. Workshop Happy Feet

Deze workshop richt zich op, de ons vaak onbekende, geniale architectuur van de voet. Een veelheid van botten, gewrichten, banden en spieren werken op “geoliede” wijze samen en geven kracht en veerkracht aan lopen, rennen springen, dansen, afzetten enz. Het doel is een uitgebreide, hernieuwde kennismaking met onze voeten waarbij welzijn/ welbevinden, “aandrift” vermogen, stabiliteit, evenwicht en coördinatie centraal staan.

Locatie: Pilates Works Antwerpen, Oude Leeuwenrui 22 (1ste verd.), 2000 Antwerpen, België.
Tijd en Datum: Zaterdag 25-02-2012 van 9.30 tot 13.00 uur.
Kosten: € 140,- (Indien ook “Relax your neck, liberate your shoulders”, dan € 230,- voor beiden.)

2. Workshop relax your neck - liberate your shoulders

Deze workshop richt zich op het wegnemen van spanning uit één van de meest stressgevoelige delen van ons lichaam. Het doel is om op een creatieve, speelse wijze op mentaal en fysiek niveau inzicht te krijgen in zowel de functie als het functioneren van onze nek en schouders, zodat we in elke situatie over een goede houding, krachtenverdeling en beweeglijkheid kunnen gaan beschikken.

Photographs sexy feet on the beach

Last June Ann, together with colleague Christl Muls (from the CCPilates studio in Ghent) organised a two-day workshop with Pilates excercises specifically for the feet. All workshops wre sold out and were received with enthusiasm by all who participated. At the end of the workshop there was still some time left for a glass of cava or bio juice.
We plan to organise even more of these one-off workshops in the future so keep your eyes peeled!

Because the number of spots is limited, if you enroll in a MAT1 or MAT intro class your enrollment will only be considered valid after payment of the class or a 10 class card. Pilates for men: 2 books reviewed

Pilates Men

Even though Joseph Pilates himself, as most of his early clientele, was a man (well, duh!) nowadays we can truly speak of a Pilates gender gap. Most studios seem to be run by women for a mostly female clientele and it doesn't really help that the only high profile Pilates magazine on the stands, Pilates Style, bears more than a passing resemblance to Cosmopolitan magazine.

Men, however, do get Pilates. Pilates as an exercise programme can be tailored to men's specific needs and is also a great addition for men already doing other sports, be it tennis, running, weight lifting or golf.

We've read through 2 recent publications aiming to bring Pilates to the male population, here's what we found:

Complete Pilates for men book coverThe complete book of Pilates for men is a well-organized book: every exercise is explained in great detail, with clear illustrations of every part of each move. There's also a lot of attention to the mind aspect of every exercise and ways of adapting the exercises to your specific needs (an injury, for example). The book includes exercise plans for beginner, intermediate and advanced mat and reformer on the mat routines. Completing the book is a chapter on how to adapt the exercises for a weak or injured neck, shoulder or back. While no book can replace training with a certified instructor The comple book of Pilates for men is a good starting point for newcomers and can double up as a reference book for more experienced Pilates men. Highly recommended.

Pilates for men book cover Pilates for men takes a slightly less purist approach and mixes up Pilates with more classic gym exercises, including weights. One example exercise combines, for example, the scissors (a part of the classic Pilates Stomach Series) with a bench press using dumbells. Purists will balk at this aproach but we can see how men would enjoy this kind of combination. The book includes several exercise routines, has clear explanations of each exercise using photographs but glosses over (or completely ignores) other vital aspects of Pilates such as body-mind connection and proper breathing. In short, while not a bad book, Pilates for men is more of an exercise book than a true Pilates reference.
